What builds up on a Brooklyn sofa
A sofa in a walk-up does the work of three pieces of furniture: couch, desk chair and guest bed. Body oil settles into the arms and the headrest first, which is why those spots turn glossy and dark long before the seat does. Pet hair works down into the seams, and a spill wicks through the cover into the foam, so what you can see on top is rarely all of it.

Fabric codes come first
Before water touches a sofa, we look for the cleaning code on the tag under a cushion. W means a water-based cleaner is fine. S means solvent only, because water will leave rings. W/S takes either, and X means vacuum or brush only, with nothing wet at all. The key below is the short version.
Then we test a hidden patch, and the test decides the method, not the other way round. Cushions are cleaned evenly, every one of them, so the whole sofa dries to a single colour instead of one bright seat beside two grey ones. Chapter 03
Outdoor furniture, before it goes into storage
Patio cushions and frames collect mildew and pollen over a summer on a Brooklyn roof deck or a back yard in Queens. Cleaning them before they go into a closet or a storage cage means the mildew does not spend the winter growing in the dark.
Outdoor furniture can be cleaned in the same visit as the indoor sofa, which saves a second trip across the borough. We would rather catch a spotted cushion in October than argue with it in May.
